Toenail Fungus thrives under toenails because that area is often damp and warm. As previously mentioned, this fungus can carry an unappealing odor and turn the nails into a dark yellowish color because of the nature of the fungus under the nail. This fungus can occur from an unsanitary pedicure, from the gym showers or from a barefoot walk around a public pool.
There are a variety of treatments for toenail fungus such as by laser, medicines or diet. Laser treatment eliminates the fungus under the nail completely and is relatively quick. Changes to your diet are helpful, especially if the foods you eat result in good bacteria, such as foods high in protein, healthy fats or probiotics. By eating healthy and supercharging your immune system, toenail fungus has little chance of growing to the point where laser surgery is required. Medicines and unique nail polishes can also assist in reducing the fungus. It should also be noted that toenail fungus can be fatal to those of older age because of its ability to enter the blood stream. In addition to the older crowd, those with diabetes, athlete's foot or smokers are also at a greater risk of developing toenail fungus. It also helps to wear socks that are breathable and allow air to move in and out.
Toenail Fungus should not be taken lightly and should be treated as soon as possible to prevent the onset of great odor and discoloration. Don’t hesitate to contact our office online for an appointment. Our doctors will tailor a specific strategy to best help you with this condition.
